The class will meet at parks and other outdoor locations so that you can observe and draw from the water, whether close-up, on the shore of a small lake, or viewing the Ohio River from an Eden Park overlook. You will draw water’s movement, reflections, and colors, simultaneously developing a sense of its place in our compositions as well as the world. Color theory will be included, but you are also encouraged to work with color intuitively. Choose a medium that inspires you, whether traditional drawing forms like graphite, charcoal, and conté crayon or colored media like oil pastels, colored pencils, ink, and watercolor. Karen Saunders Karen is a multi-disciplinary artist who hopscotched across the Midwest before landing in Cincinnati, where she’s been practicing as an artist and arts educator for almost three decades. She has a BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with an emphasis on Ceramics and an MA in Art Education from Miami University at Oxford.

For the better part of 20 years, she has worked with diverse audiences at local institutions, such as the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Kennedy Heights Arts Center, and exhibiting her art at such venues as the Contemporary Arts Center, Canton Art Museum, Richmond Art Museum, and 21c Museum/Hotel.

She routinely works collaboratively with community and artist groups, with one notable example being the Bombshells of Cincinnati, a largely anonymous group of local lady crafters who juxtapose vandalism with the non-threatening nature of fiber art.

Karen is inspired by large-scale projects that might intimidate less resourceful and creative artists. She is ever challenging her own expectations and growing her ongoing practice.

Emerging in the 1920s as a combination of the rhythm, styling and technique of African Dance (a la The Charleston) with the lead/follow partnering aspects of European dances (like the Waltz), Lindy Hop takes its name from a coincidental historical event of the same time period: the first ever trans-atlantic flight piloted by Charles Lindberg in 1927. Created by African-Americans and traditionally danced to Big Band Jazz Music, Lindy Hop is the “founding father” of all future Swing Dance idioms.

Born in Southern California during the Swing Era, Balboa is a close position partner dance that mixes well with Lindy Hop and Charleston. Legend has it that the dance halls in that region were so packed that dancers had to confine their movements to smaller spaces, giving rise to the style and technique of Balboa.

Tai chi and qigong are complementary traditional Chinese arts that help to improve one’s health, vitality, and well-being. Tai chi is a series of gentle flowing movements based on martial arts. Qigong is a mind/body exercise that helps stimulate “elemental life force.” In this class, we will focus on the basic forms of traditional Yang tai chi and in particular the Yang 10 step form in January and the Yang 8 step form in March. Over time we will begin to explore the Yang 16 step. Both of these forms are excellent preparation to practice the longer Yang 24 step form. We will also learn the Daoyin Bao Jian Gong, a simple qigong form. Both the tai chi and qigong forms can be performed standing or seated. In addition we will explore some of the philosophy and basic principles behind these arts.

Rick is also the director of the Center for Wisdom and Leadership.
Though the crux of Rick's work has centered on leadership and the development of wise leaders, for the last decade Rick has also focused on  wisdom in “second half of life,” the midlife transition, and in particular what it means to be an elder. Rick has taught classes and run seminars and workshops on the topics of wisdom, spirituality and aging. He also  leads a number of Elder Wisdom Circles around the city. Elder Wisdom Circles are groups of older adults, generally in retirement, that gather weekly to discuss such topics as conscious aging, spirituality, and the journey towards wisdom. The circles gather to learn from each other, encourage lifelong learning and growth, and discern how they can make a difference in the world – small or large.

    • All classes are open to students with any range of experience, from beginners learning for the first time to experienced dancers looking to solidify fundamentals or expand their knowledge base.
    • Students are not required to bring a partner to class.
    • In class, we use a partner rotation system where Leads dance with all the Follows and Follows dance with all the Leads. All students are expected to participate in the rotation unless there is an extenuating circumstance. Our classes are not designed for students to stay with the same partner.
    • Students are allowed to choose their own role in class, Lead or Follow. Students may also switch roles as frequently as they like.
    • It is highly likely that in every class, students will dance with some partners of the same gender and some of different genders during the rotation. The expectation is that all students be respectful of all other students at all times.
  • Tuesdays, 7:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Blues music is diverse. So is Blues Dance. As we explore how to dance to blues music, we will focus on the “conversation” you have with your partner while dancing and how to establish and maintain great communication with each other. Difficulty level: Medium/Low

World Peace Yoga Created and operating in Clifton on Ludlow Ave. since 2005, World Peace Yoga is a modern yoga studio inspired by ancient wisdom and practices. Our classes are designed with the intention for you to connect with and manifest your most authentic self. We believe the practice of yoga is a form of self-love and self-acceptance. World Peace Yoga works to create a brave space that honors ALL bodies to explore and nourish their physical, emotional, and spiritual self. As a developing, fluid, and ever-transforming studio, we teach a spiritual, holistic approach to yoga with classes, programs, and events that encourage each person to leave a legacy of a life well-lived, a life of compassion and love. We believe the practices of yoga are for any living, breathing body. The only requirement for yoga practice is to breathe. You don’t have to look, dress, or be any way but yourself. This is your practice, your choice, your consent. You are invited to come as you are, allow for pause, and be open to change. The practices of yoga have the ability to move our lives in a positive way, deepening awareness and mindfulness, and it is important that all are welcome and have access. This is what we mean when we say we offer “yoga for people who breathe.” World Peace Yoga is ecstatic about collaborating with the CCAC to offer wellness classes, such as mindful movement, meditation, and yoga in the gallery and on the rooftop. You are in for a beautiful experience.
