CCAC named the signature gallery of our new home after Elizabeth Nourse, one of the earliest women artists to achieve widespread recognition (and make a living) as a professional painter. Nourse and her contemporaries were bestowed with the title “New Woman,” describing their different and changing roles within the patriarchal society they inhabited. More than a century later, CCAC believes it is of critical importance to continue uplifting the voices of emerging women artists – including those whose personal identity intersects with other groups who have been historically marginalized, such as members of the LGBTQIA and BIPOC communities – to provide them a platform and accessible professional development.

The “New Woman” biennial juried exhibition follows in Nourse’s tradition, showcasing the artwork of women artists of Cincinnati and beyond. One winning artist will be selected from the group as the New Woman Artist-in-Residence at CCAC.
