Seeing Woman

Edith Susarret Marrero

The late Edith Susarret Marrero (1923-2022) began drawing as soon as she could pick up a pencil; it was a way of life for Edith. Drawing, and later painting, provided an avenue for seeing and for being seen. This exhibit traces Marrero’s gaze over a long career, exploring her extensive oeuvre by focusing on the artist’s many portraits of women and the relationships that support and entangle them. Through her diverse depictions of the female subject — intimate family scenes, imagined fantasies, models posing in an artist’s studio — viewers are invited to reflect on their own connections to womanhood, on seeing, and on being seen.
