A Tribute to Elizabeth Catlett by 14 Regional Rug Hookers
This exhibition honors the enduring legacy of Harlem Renaissance artist Elizabeth Catlett. Inspired by her powerful 1947 block print series I Am the Black Woman, these hand-hooked rugs reimagine Catlett’s work in fiber, offering a contemporary reflection on her themes of resilience, labor, and dignity.
The rug hookers in this exhibition honor Catlett’s vision, translating her bold, graphic prints into fiber while preserving their emotional depth and historical significance. Through intricate loops and textures, these works celebrate Catlett’s lifelong mission: making art that belongs to everyone and speaks to the liberation of the heart, spirit, and mind. By reinterpreting these images through fiber, the artists extend Catlett’s legacy, ensuring that her message of justice and perseverance continues to inspire new generations.
