Oil and Dust
Paul Loehle
CCAC presents Oil & Dust by Paul Loehle, the winner of CCAC’s 14th annual Golden Ticket exhibition. Loehle’s artistic practice draws from the rich, tactile traditions of oil paint and chalk pastel. These materials, imbued with the weight of art history, evoke the cycles of life, time, and decay. Through his portraits — often based on selfies, social media posts, and candid photos — Loehle captures fleeting moments of contemporary life, blending the immediacy of our digital age with the timelessness of historical techniques.
Loehle’s recent works reflect his growing family and explores the intimacy of creating a life while attempting to immortalize the fragile and ephemeral. The paintings draw upon icongraphic symbols like halos and crosses alongside pagan motifs, weaving a narrative that considers immortality, heritage, and the cyclical nature of existence. Oil & Dust invites viewers to reflect on their own connections to time, memory, and the enduring human desire to make sense of it all.
