A fresh, urban take on bedtime stories in the spirit of The House That Jack Built and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, from debut author Anne Wynter and Caldecott Honoree Oge Mora. Everybody in the red brick building was asleep. Until . . . WaaaAAH! Rraak! Wake up! Pitter patter STOMP! Pssheew! A chain reaction of noises wakes up several children (and a cat) living in an apartment building. But it’s late in the night, so despite the disturbances, one by one, the building’s inhabitants return to their beds—this time with a new set of sounds to lull them to sleep.

A boy plants a bunch of seeds to make a garden, and he watches the sky, waiting for rain to fall. With him are his dog, his turtle, a rabbit, and some birds. The changing seasons and the different colors of the landscape are represented here in great detail, while the idea of the passage of time is masterfully represented. This book is not only an elegant look at the cyclical processes of nature; it’s also a visual poem that speaks about patience, hope, and the constant renewal of life.

A moving picture book for ages 3 to 8 about a daisy who is told she’s “just a weed”—and embarks on a journey to find her place in the garden. Daisy is new to the garden and just opening her petals to the sun when Rose tells her that she's just a weed. What’s a weed? Daisy asks. Weeds aren't planted on purpose, Rose explains, and they only get in the way. Soon Daisy compares herself to other plants in the garden: she isn't tall like Sunflower, nor sweet like Strawberry, nor fragrant like Rose. Daisy worries that Rose might be right—that she is a weed after all—until a strange and beautiful plant offers Daisy a different perspective. Maybe Daisy can choose her own purpose! And why do others get to decide who she is?

Spare, rhythmic text and pairs of simple circular shapes convey opposite relationships in the arc of a day in this very simple concept book. Dots here, dots there, you can see dots everywhere! Some are loud, and some are quiet. Some are happy, and some are sad. Some dots even taste yummy, while others taste bad. Graphic designer Patricia Intriago sets bold, circular shapes against a stark white background to emphasize opposite dot relationships.
