Thomas Osorio My work details my contemplations on the subjectivity of reality. The nature of a physical painting which is rendered in a virtual format serves as a metaphor. The work composes of the action of approaching a physical art form such as painting to represent something that is “real” which is then metamorphosed into a virtual format i.e., “unreality”. This metaphor is a signifier of the relation to the shared objective and rationalist world that constitutes the “real” and the “unreal” reality that exists in my mind. This “unreal” world is comprised of spiritual revelations, rumination on the nature of society and morality, and attempts at gaining knowledge in the infinte expanse of void that constitutes existence. My art serves as a meditative process within this internal world in which the works created are not necessarily representations of anything, but rather a series of byproducts created from the process of contemplation. https://www.thomasosorio.com/

Drawing is one of the oldest forms of visual art - think of the caves! - and yet it is also an immediate and vital form of communication today. In this class, we’ll learn to draw by observing real objects. By exercising hand, mind, and heart, we’ll also focus on the healing potential of drawing, which engages the “right side” of the brain. For additional inspiration, we'll study examples of drawings and other art forms throughout history. Main requirement: open-mindedness! See below for materials list.

Water is a most essential element: transfixing to watch, enjoyable and challenging to draw and paint. Class will meet at parks and other outdoor locations, observing and drawing from the water, whether close-up, on the “shore” of a small lake, or viewing the Ohio River from an Eden Park overlook. Students will draw water’s movement, reflections, colors, simultaneously developing a sense of its place in our compositions as well as the world. Color theory will be included, and students are also encouraged to work with color intuitively. Choose your media: from “traditional” drawing media (graphite, charcoal, conté crayon, etc.), to drawing media with color (oil pastels, water-soluble oil pastels, colored pencils, etc.) to ink to watercolor.
