    This class will show how one can print at home without a press. Students will be exposed to multiple methods of relief printing; each project will progressively ease students into more complex ways of printmaking, offering a variety of projects for distinct skill sets and interests. We will also be using “safer” water-based inks versus the traditionally oil based inks which require solvents, ventilation, and professional disposal.

    Lia Cavalaris Lia is a fine artist who utilizes various media, with a focus on drawing and video. Her current work is focused on communicating ideas of mindfulness, and assisting one in self-development. She is constantly striving to learn new skills and gain experience.

    Explore artmaking while embracing your inner weirdo in this new drop-in art class led by Bridget and Madison of Weird Girl Energy. Championing the idea that everyone is an artist, Weird Girl Energy encourages students of all ages and artistic abilities to celebrate their differences and create community through artmaking. Students will utilize thrifted items and traditional art materials – as well as inspiring items from home – to construct an upcycled art piece each week. Come to class every week or when you can!

    Madison Britt and Bridget Hamilton, Weird Girl Energy Madison Britt is a visual artist engaging with a variety of mediums including sculpture, painting, digital illustration, collage, and fiber arts. Her background is in social justice work and community organizing. Madison brings this training to her work as she views her art as a radical expression of identity and joy, and strives to make art education more accessible and community-centered. Bridget Hamilton is a writer and visual artist, focusing on sculpture and found-object art. Her work seeks to change the way art is perceived and expand the definition of fine art to include unconventional materials and methods. In her art, Bridget explores creation as an essential healing practice.

    Tai Chi is the slow meditative Chinese martial art practiced to promote health, balance, mental calm and clarity. Come and join us to learn and practice this profound and wonderful art. No previous experience is necessary.

    Uri Sella Uri grew up in Israel where he served in the Israeli army and studied law. Upon graduation he clerked on the Israeli Supreme Court and in 1994 moved to New York City to start a career as a corporate lawyer.
    In New York he discovered a passion to express himself with paint. Twice a week, after a long day in the office, he would shed his suit and tie and travel downtown to attend Jack Potter’s evening classes on drawing and composition at the School of Visual Arts. Several years later he decided to abandon the practice of law and joined his wife in Cincinnati. Upon the birth of his first child he became a stay-at-home father. He also studies and teaches tai chi.

    Create your own colorful coasters in this one-time workshop! Led by local maker Jess Morini, students will work with alcohol ink to fashion colorful and functional abstract works of art.

    Tai chi is a traditional Chinese art that helps to improve one’s health, vitality, and wellbeing. Tai chi is a series of gentle flowing movements based on martial arts. In this class, you will learn some of the basic forms of traditional Yang tai chi, which can be performed standing or seated. We will also explore some of the philosophy and basic principles behind this art.
    • Ages: Adults ages 50+

    Rick Warm Rick Warm is the director of the Center for Wisdom and Leadership. The crux of his work has centered on leadership and the development of wise leaders. For the last several years Rick has also focused on  wisdom in "second half of life," the midlife transition, and eldership. Rick has taught classes and run seminars and workshops on the topics of wisdom, spirituality and aging. He also  leads Elder Wisdom Circles. Elder Wisdom Circles are groups of older adults, generally in retirement, that gather weekly to discuss such topics as conscious aging, spirituality, and the journey towards wisdom. The circles gather to learn from each other, encourage lifelong learning and growth, and discern how they can make a difference in the world – small or large. A major focus of eldership is “leadership in the second half of life” – distinct from leadership during our careers and working years.
    Rick has been an executive coach since 2005 and is also a leadership consultant. He facilitates leadership seminars and workshops, and has served as an adjunct professor of leadership at Northern Kentucky University. In addition, Rick has lived, worked, and studied for extended periods of time on five continents, giving him a strong global and intercultural perspective and facility in multiple languages. He is a lifelong musician and martial artist which contributes to his scholarship and interest in integrating body, mind, heart, and spirit into leadership development. He is also a practitioner of TriYoga, a student of tai chi and a fervent devotee of Argentine tango. Rick has an MBA in International Business from the University of South Carolina and a Ph.D. in Leadership and Change from Antioch University. The focus of his research is on leadership, wisdom, education, mastery, transformation and the hero’s journey. He is also an ICF credentialed coach with a professional certification in individual and organizational coaching from The Hudson Institute.

    Using a variety of yarns and wool roving, students will learn basic tapestry techniques to weave their own modern wall hangings. An 8 x 10" tabletop loom and all fiber will be provided; students may take home their looms at the end of class to continue their weaving explorations!

    Karen Anderson Karen loves making things - especially things out of yarn! She has been a member of the Weavers Guild of Greater Cincinnati since 2004 where she knits, embroiders, dyes, spins, weaves, crochets, braids, and lucets. She is a new member of the Bombshells of Cincinnati, most recently leading the Meandering art installation for the Cincinnati Nature Center. She graduated from the Theatre School at DePaul University with a BFA in Lighting Design.

    This class will provide a brief history of 2D animation's early beginnings of being manually automated “optical illusions” to video. Each session will be dedicated to a different project, presented in the order in which they were developed historically. The class will look at animation as a fun and accessible means of creation, and how it intersects across many disciplines from physics to drawing! All supplies are included in tuition fees. Please note: this class will not cover digital animation. A basic understanding of drawing is recommended for the class, but is not necessary: templates available for students who are new to drawing!

    Express yourself freely from the inside out!  We’ll journey without judgement into the land of shapes, colors, lines, and more: an experiential journey, with drawing/painting exercises to deepen our understanding of visual language, our world, and ourselves. Students will learn from other artists’ work and words, and discover how abstraction in art can resonate both personally and universally. See below for materials list.

    • Session: 5 weeks (June 5 - July 10, 2023. No class July 3!)

    Materials for the first day:
    • White paper pad: good quality drawing paper (about 60 lb or better), at least 11” x 14
    • Oil pastels and/or water-soluble oil pastels (with water-brush): at least 12 colors, including white, black
    • Conté crayon, black; and/or square charcoal stick
    • Graphite pencil and/or charcoal pencil
    • Cloth rag(s), q-tips, cotton balls, and/or tortillons for smudging, smoothing, cleaning, etc.
    Deb Brod Deb enjoys teaching art and sharing her love of art-making and its countless therapeutic effects with people of all ages. She has taught and led community-based art projects through the Ohio Arts Council, community arts centers, schools, art museums, and many other organizations. She has created artwork for commissions (including for the Taft Museum of Art and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital), and exhibited her artwork made with many media and approaches including, painting, textiles, and installation, in the midwest (including at Cincinnati’s Contemporary Arts Center), and occasionally other parts of the country and the world. In college, Deb studied French, art history, and fine art, culminating in a masters degree in fine art in painting. Although her work often appears abstract, or non-representational, the sources of Deb's inspiration draw on both her inner life and the outer world, and range from nature to human nature.
  • Thursdays, 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

    Water is a most essential element: transfixing to watch, enjoyable and challenging to draw and paint. Class will meet at parks and other outdoor locations, observing and drawing from the water, whether close-up, on the “shore” of a small lake, or viewing the Ohio River from an Eden Park overlook. Students will draw water’s movement, reflections, colors, simultaneously developing a sense of its place in our compositions as well as the world. Color theory will be included, and students are also encouraged to work with color intuitively. Choose your media: from “traditional” drawing media (graphite, charcoal, conté crayon, etc.), to drawing media with color (oil pastels, water-soluble oil pastels, colored pencils, etc.) to ink to watercolor. See below for materials needed for the first day of class.

    • White paper pad: good quality drawing paper (about 60 lb or better); at least 11” x 14”; 50 -100 sheets, or watercolor paper, if you plan to use watercolor.
    • The materials you’re most interested in trying out or continuing to work with (see list in class description).
    Also, cloth rag(s), cotton balls, q-tips, tortillons, etc., for smudging, smoothing, cleaning, etc; erasers, esp. a kneaded eraser, if you choose “traditional” drawing materials.
