About the Panelist
Michael Collins is a White House correspondent for USA Today. He has been a Washington-based reporter for over 20 years, first with Scripps Howard News Service, where he covered Congress and other issues for Scripps' papers in Ohio, Kentucky, California, and Tennessee. He has been with USA Today for eight years and covered the White House for the past five years. As a White House correspondent, he has reported from France, Italy, Poland, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Before arriving in the nation’s capital, Collins was a reporter for The Cincinnati Post and its sister paper, The Kentucky Post in Covington. He spent five years in Frankfort, Ky., as The Kentucky Post’s state capital bureau chief, where he covered the governor and the legislature. He also served as night city editor and editorial writer. A native of Whitesburg, Ky., he is a 1984 graduate of Western Kentucky University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and served as editor of the student newspaper, the College Heights Herald. He is a member of the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame and the recipient of the 2019 College Heights Herald Award for outstanding contributions in journalism. Maryanne Zeleznik came to 91.7 WVXU in 2005 from WNKU where she served as News and Public Affairs Director for 20 years. At WVXU, she is responsible for all news and public affairs programming, hosts Morning Edition Monday through Friday, and fills in to host Cincinnati Edition. Maryanne has won numerous regional and national journalism awards including the Leo C. Lee Award for significant contributions to public radio news from the Public Radio News Directors Incorporated, as well as awards from Ohio Associated Press, Ohio Society of Professional Journalists, and the Cincinnati Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. She was named Best Talk Show Host in Cincinnati in 2017 by CityBeat readers. In 2016, The Salesian Guild honored her as Distinguished Communicator of the year. She lives in Fort Thomas with her husband, daughter and their dog Zoe.

The Evolution of Salsa

Since 1987, Cincinnati has seen tremendous growth in salsa music from the days of the Havana Martini Club featuring a salsa band every Sunday evening to the twenty-two weeks of Salsa on the Square during the summer months. But, how did salsa music evolve? How did it get to Cincinnati? This workshop will time-travel back to Cuba, the origins of salsa music. It will visit and explore the evolution of salsa music through each decade from the 1920s to the 2000s and its arrival in Cincinnati. We’ll listen to music from the 1930s during the rhumba era, the mambo craze of the 1950s, boogaloo of the 1960s in New York City, and finally the salsa explosion of the 1970s. If you want, come with your dancing shoes!

Victor Vélez
Victor Vélez, a native of Puerto Rico, grew up in New York City and now lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. His creative talents are expressed through multiple artistic disciplines as a writer, poet, photographer, and musician. Victor studied Communication Arts at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, New York and began his writing career as a freelance writer in the early 1980s. Victor’s published work includes A Quest for Answers: A Personal Journey (2003), Salsa on the Square: A Summer of Photos (2010) celebrating the annual summer salsa series on Cincinnati’s Fountain Square, Donde Esta, Señor? (Where Are You, Lord?) written in Spanish, and most recently, the suspense thriller Triduum of All Hallows (2022). He is the author of five poetry books.

LISA COOPER HOLMES is the Proprietor, Queen, and “Choco Boss” of the fabulous Haute Chocolate in downtown Montgomery. Swing Dance Foundations: Balboa

Born in Southern California during the Swing Era, Balboa is a close position partner dance that mixes well with Lindy Hop and Charleston. Legend has it that the dance halls in that region were so packed that dancers had to confine their movements to smaller spaces, giving rise to the style and technique of Balboa.

Swing Dance Foundations: Lindy Hop

Emerging in the 1920s as a combination of the rhythm, styling and technique of African Dance (a la The Charleston) with the lead/follow partnering aspects of European dances (like the Waltz), Lindy Hop takes its name from a coincidental historical event of the same time period: the first ever trans-atlantic flight piloted by Charles Lindberg in 1927. Created by African-Americans and traditionally danced to Big Band Jazz Music, Lindy Hop is the “founding father” of all future Swing Dance idioms.

Highly Improvable Comedy Show: April 2024

with Highly Improvable Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; show begins at 8:00 p.m. Cincinnati’s own improvisational (improv) comedy troupe returns to CCAC for an evening of unscripted fun! Performing a series of improvisational games fueled by audience suggestions, Highly Improvable makes each show uniquely entertaining. This event is for adults and children 13 and older. Highly Improvable has been performing since 2011, when the troupe formed in a Hyde Park basement with three members. Now, the troupe has close to twenty members and regularly performs at the Lebanon Theatre Company and CCAC, as well as at the Improv Festival Cincinnati (IF Cincy). Their shows include long and short-form comedy at a variety of venues, and the troupe has branched out into sketch, stand-up, and podcasting. Highly Improvable alumni have gone on to perform at Second City, iO, the Annoyance, as well as a variety of different dramatic theater productions.

About the Instructor

Fabiola Méndez Native to Caguas, PR, Fabiola Méndez began playing the cuatro, a 5-double string traditional guitar of Puerto Rico, when she was 6 years old.

She was a student at the Hogar del Cuatro Puertorriqueño, the Humacao Musical Institute, the Antonio Paoli School of Music in Caguas, the Conservatorio de Artes del Caribe, and Berklee College of Music, where in 2018 she graduated as the first student to play the Puerto Rican cuatro as principal instrument.

She has worked with organizations such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Celebrity Series of Boston, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Puerto Rican Arts Alliance in Chicago, Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, among many others. She has collaborated with artists such as the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, Totó La Momposina, Pedro Capó, Andy Montañez, Victoria Sanabria, Cucco Peña, Decimanía de Puerto Rico, Danny Rivera, Chicago Philharmonic, and the Boston Landmarks Orchestra.

Her list of recordings include: the Banco Popular Special Eco (2008), Fabiola Méndez and Herencia Criolla (2009), Ready for Departure (2014), Cuatro Sinfónico (2019), Al Otro Lado Del Charco (2019), and Afrorriqueña (2021), the last three being cataloged as part of the best 20 productions of 2019 and 2021 consecutively, according to the National Foundation for Popular Culture. In 2022, she produced her first documentary "Negrura", showcasing Afro-Latinx stories in topics around colorism and discrimination within our own communities.

In recent years, she’s had the honor of receiving recognition such as the Quincy Jones Award, ambassador for the Puerto Rican Day Parade in NYC, a motion from the PR House of Representatives as the first cuatro player to graduate from Berklee, the Brother Thomas Fellowship 2021, the Whippoorwill Arts Fellowship 2022, and the ASCAP Foundation Lucille and Jack Yellen Award 2022.

Currently, Fabiola and her trio present her original music nationally and internationally. She is an artist in residence for the Boston Landmarks Orchestra, a fellow for Whippoorwill Arts, and a composer for children's animated series, including PBS Kids shows Alma's Way and Work It Out Wombats, and HBO Max's Mecha Builders, produced by Sesame Street.

Are you ready to explore Africa without your passport? This class is not just an Afro-dance workout. It's an education, a journey, and a new way of merging the dynamic dance moves of Afro beats with an intensive full-body workout. You'll learn to move your body in ways you didn't know it could move while burning calories and having fun. Add cultural flavor to your workout routine. This class will feed your mind and soul as you learn the moves and rhythms paired with energizing music from the African continent.

About the Instructor
Donald Broerman Donald Broerman is an active composer, whose compositions are primarily solo guitar works. His music has been heard in concert at: The Cincinnati Guitar Society, Dayton Guitar Fest, CCM’s Something Different, Classical Revolution and House Concerts all over the midwest and as far as North Carolina. With two albums of original classical and classical crossover compositions, Donald's music has reached listeners in 73 countries and 5 continents. Donald earned his BM in Classical Guitar Performance at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) under the direction of Clare Callahan and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He has also taken masterclasses with internationally acclaimed artists: Oscar Ghiglia, David Russell, Zoran Dukic, Marcin Dylla, Carlos Perez and Johannes Möller Donald studied composition with Terry McQuilken at the University of Oregon, Orchestration at CCM and took private lessons with Jennifer Jolley (Professor of Music Theory and Composition at CUNY Lehman College, President and Co-founder of N.A.N.O. Works Opera Company). Donald humbly gives back to the community through the Greater Cincinnati Guitar Society where he served as President from 2013 to 2022. His current role in the Society is Education Director. Donald is a member and guitar adjudicator for the Ohio Music Educators Association. He served as co-director and guitar faculty for the Summer Youth Guitar Workshop at CCM. Donald is a dedicated teacher whose students have won both state and regional gold medals through the Royal Conservatory of Music. He currently teaches at Indian Springs Academy of Music, The Wyoming Fine Arts Center, Leaves of Learning, Frederick Douglass Elementary, as well as his Home Studio.
